CranioSacral Therapy for Concussion & PCS

There's a way to treat concussion that hasn't hit the headlines.

It's time to change that.

CranioSacral Therapy has 40 years of clinical practice development
150,000+ trained practitioners worldwide
Holistic manual therapy approach
Growing evidence base of support for concussion injuries

The conversation about concussion in sport is growing.

Concussion spotters are now standard in top-level football, rugby and the NFL; there's better recognition of what actually happens, new protocols around returning to play and treatment options beyond 'rest'.
This is good progress.

But for 20-30% of people who have sustained a concussion there can be many more longer terms problems. Some people simply don't fully get better and are still struggling months or years later. This, most commonly, is called post-concussion syndrome (PCS). If there is help available it's mostly around managing the symptoms.

But what if a different kind of manual therapy could offer help?
CranioSacral Therapy, developed in the late 1970s by Dr John Upledger (from Osteopathy and Cranial Osteopathy) is a hands-on approach that addresses the structural, neurological, and often emotional dimensions of what's been disrupted.

With more than forty years of clinical development, 150,000+ trained practitioners worldwide, published research, and an expanding awareness of its effectiveness....:

We think there's a case to be made for including CranioSacral Therapy in the concussion conversation.

These pages are making that case, whether you're struggling with symptoms or working in the field and want another option to help your clients.

In 2015, 11 retired NFL American footballers with persistent post-concussion syndrome were treated with CST and two other manual therapies, over 5 days.

They experienced statistically significant improvements in memory, reaction time, chronic pain, cervical range of motion, and sleep, many of which continued to improve after the programme ended.

For Athletes & Families

I want to know if CranioSacral Therapy could help with my symptoms.

You've been told to rest and wait. How long has it been now - months? Years? Maybe you've tried a variety of approaches, maybe you've been told there is nothing else that can be done to help. CST can address some of the deeper held structural tensions in your body and brain. As these release, symptoms change.

For Professionals: Clinicians, Referrers & Researchers

I want to understand what CranioSacral Therapy could add to what I'm already doing.

Rehabilitation frameworks have developed a lot in the last 10-20 years, particularly for recent concussions. But there are layers of post-concussion recovery, and for the 20-30% of people who do not improve as hoped, there can be more severe consequences. CST gives us skills to help pinpoint, sometimes very precisely, where the issues are. Here's the evidence for our case.
